Scoot Henderson Sets NBA Record For Worst +/- In A Blowout Loss To The Heat | Sideline Sources

Scoot Henderson had a rough start to the season but seems to have turned a corner. However, there are games where he’ll impact the game negatively like yesterday’s outing against the Miami Heat. In fact, the 2023 second-overall pick set the record for the worst +/- in NBA history in that game.

After the dust settled in the Heat’s 142-82 victory, Henderson had a +/- of -58. In all fairness, everyone who played over 24 minutes for the Portland Trail Blazers was atrocious. Kris Murray was -49, Dalano Banton -44, while Rayan Rupert and Dalano Banton were -38. The win was also Miami’s largest in franchise history.

What is the +/- Stat?

The +/- in basketball is a stat to measure how the team did scoring-wise when a certain player is on the court. In Henderson’s case, that means the Trail Blazers are outscored by 58 points in his 44 minutes on the floor.

Some fans call the +/- the most overrated and misleading stat in the league especially when used to measure impact over one game. To make sense of the +/-, it’s better to look at the person’s whole body of work throughout the season.

For example, league leaders in this department are Jayson Tatum, Nikola Jokic, Derrick White, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Three of the four are MVP candidates, and White is a starter for the Boston Celtics, the league’s best team record-wise.

On the other hand, Henderson has the sixth-worst +/- in the season. The others above him are Miles Bridges and Brandon Miller of the Charlotte Hornets, and Kyle Kuzma and Jordan Poole of the Washington Wizards.

This means only one thing and it’s not that these individuals are bums. Their teams are simply not good enough to compete with the rest of the field. In this context, the 20-year-old was playing mostly with G-Leaguers, without Malcolm Brogdon, Jerami Grant, and Anfernee Simons.

Setting the record for the worst +/- should leave a bad taste in his mouth. However, the truth is that what transpired is not Henderson’s fault entirely. On the other hand, he should strive to be better.
